TIPU COLLECTION

Designed and made in collaboration with Tiipoi, Tipu is a collection of salt and pepper mills, baking pins, and chapatti pins made by hand in the wooden toy-making town of Channapatna, a small city located just 60 km southwest of Bangalore. Taking inspiration from Channapatna’s tradition of hand-carved and lacquered toys, specifically the shapes and colors of children’s rattles and stacking games commonly made by the artisans of the region. The shiny colors come from a process of lacquering using a centuries-old resin which is deposited on the bark of trees by insects. The craft can be traced back to the 11th/12th centuries and flourished under Tipu Sultan, the king of Mysore, after whom the collection was named.
